Bio

 

Denise Brook is a San Diego-based artist whose figurative paintings draw on the visual language and cultural memory of Southern California, where she was raised in the 1970s. A first-generation Latvian American, she earned a BFA in Fine Art from California State University, Fresno.

Brook's early studio practice included three-dimensional constructions made from foam core—small, meticulously built worlds that extended beyond the picture plane. In 1994, her work was reviewed by O.K. Harris Works of Art in New York, where associate director Ethan Karp described the pieces as “first-rate, lively, and smoothly ironic.”

 

After years working professionally with images, design, and visual communication, Brook returned to fine art, eventually moving from constructed sculpture into layered figurative painting. Her current work continues that interest in building altered worlds, using found photographs, displaced imagery, symbolic objects, humor, and visual clues to explore memory, nostalgia, and the uneasy space between what we see and what we understand.

Brook's work has been exhibited nationally in juried exhibitions and institutions including the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance Biennial, The San Diego Museum of Art Artist Guild, and Brea Galleries’ Made in California, and has been featured in Create Magazine and The Writing Disorder.
